Installation Survey for Refinery Cable Security

[Case Study]

The Results: Zero-Risk Infrastructure Deployment

The stakes are highest near active refineries. Our work directly reduced the financial and operational risk for the client by achieving the following:

  • De-Risked Installation: We established a safe subsea cable route with guaranteed clearance from all active pipelines, utility tunnels, and critical infrastructure within the refinery's operational zone. This prevented potential damage to high-value assets.

  • Hazard Mitigation: We used geophysical tools to accurately identify and map all seabed obstacles and hazards (including debris and anchor scars), eliminating the risk of damage or costly faults during the cable installation process.

  • Engineering Integrity: We delivered certified, high-resolution data necessary for the final cable engineering design, burial specifications, and submission of all required O&G regulatory documentation, securing final sign-off.

The Full Story: Precision in a High-Risk Environment

Working adjacent to an active Oil and Gas refinery is one of the highest-risk projects in marine surveying. The installation of a new subsea cable required absolute certainty that it would not interact with the existing live infrastructure.

Our team deployed a multi-sensor geophysical approach. Side Scan Sonar provided a photographic-quality image of the seabed surface, while Bathymetry mapped the elevations. Most critically, the combined data allowed us to model the safe zone for the new cable, routing it through the highly congested area with specific, guaranteed clearances from all high-value assets. By providing certified data on burial specifications and clearance confirmation, we gave the O&G client the essential documentation required to satisfy internal safety standards and secure regulatory approval, ensuring the cable could be installed without disrupting the refinery's critical operations.
